The Benefits of Prenatal Yoga

Yoga during pregnancy has a lot of benefits, not only for you but for your baby. It helps allow the space for your baby to grow not only in your physical body, but in your mind.

Pelvic Floor Strengthening One of the best reasons to stick to a prenatal yoga program is because it will continue to strengthen your pelvic floor. A strong pelvic floor is so important during labour and delivery as well as in your postpartum recovery.

Body Aches and Pains

Growing a baby is very hard on your body and I am sure you have noticed that as your pregnancy moves along, your body is becoming more uncomfortable. Incorporating yoga into your weekly routine will help with your new body aches. It will also help to open the chest and hips to prepare for childbirth. Not only will your body be thanking you post-yoga but you might improve your sleep and decrease anxiety in the process. Tell your teacher when you are experiencing a specific pain and they will guide you in certain poses to help. If the pain does not subside with yoga be sure to contact your OB or Midwife. Breath Work Breathing is going to be the tool that will help you the most during your labour. Practicing your breathing techniques early and throughout your pregnancy will make it easier for you in the delivery room. Practice makes perfect in this case and having confidence in your breath work will help you get in the zen zone during contractions. Your prenatal teacher will go through many breathing techniques and meditations during the pregnancy. Pick one you love and practice it every night before bed. Connection Being part of a prenatal yoga class will help you have a sense of community and will give you the opportunity to discuss your pregnancy with others experiencing the same magical yet intimidating journey. Who knows, you might end up finding a playmate for your baby before they are even born! Just remember to take things slow and listen to your body. If a pose isn't working for you, modify it or take a breath in savasana. Namaste. Love Nastassja
